Cinema Summer

First, some long due thoughts on two stars movies:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Good to the last drop. The film's got ripples of Python and a splashy opening musical number that's the early frontrunner for Oscar's Best Song (and what a race that is!). It's witty and weird, just as we'd hoped. And the flash-style entries to the Guide are worth the price of admission. Thanks for all the fish, indeed!

Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

So Anakin's grown up and become a bad actor, gotten Padme preggers, and now he sees her death in his nightmares. Why not turn to the dark side in hopes of controling life itself, right? That's the idea in the final installment of this legendary culture that virtually created a thing called "the nerd." Besides the fact that Anakin's reason for turning to the dark side is rooted in bad acting and dialougue ("Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo"?!) I think we can all agree that this one really rocked. Ewan McGregor and Ian McDermid acted as Forces to be reckoned with (perhaps if Hayden McChristianson had played Anakin, he would've been good?), and Lucas may have easily brought most of us to tears with the death of so many Jedi (the sequence was quiet and disturbing, a fate we knew was coming).
What's this? Compassion for the Jedi? Yoda giving a CGI performance that even rivals Gollum? A heartbreaking battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin? I think we all need a hug from a wookie after this one! Have we all become nerds, or does this movie really bring a sigh of relief and grief to the end of the otherwise obnoxious prequals?
John Williams surely could've found a place for Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" on the soundtrack.

Phew. Alright, now, looking ahead to the rest of the summer, here are some predictions. I can only safely pledge allegiance to two movies as of now. Do some reasearch, and don't hold too much against me. I haven't seen any of them. I've got about as much knowledge on these movies as _____________________ (insert Dan Rather, George Bush or Newsweek joke here). But I do have some good hunches.

TOO GOOD TO MISS
Cinderella Man
The Brothers Grimm

TOO CLOSE TO CALL
Batman Begins
Bewithced
War of the Worlds
The Bad News Bears

TOO LAME TO BEAR
Madagascar
Herbie: Full Loaded
The Fantastic Four
Sky High

EXACTLY WHAT YOU THINK IT WILL BE
Mr. and Mrs. Smith (explosions, comedic domestic violence, nakedness)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (creepier than a goose-bumped collarbone)
Wedding Crashers (a cracky Vaugn/Wilson comedy, probably with Stiller in a cameo)

MMM popcorn!

Don't forget "Horrible CGI Boy and Lava Girl in 3D!"
Or is that saved for a Holiday release?

Thanks for all the rockin comments. Shark Boy and Lava Girl is just too weird to even think about. Did you ever see Spy Kids? Too weird and just bad in general. The stuff for Happy Meal toys. Narnia isn't out until December 9, but I'm already getting the same palm sweat and spine tingles that I did over the last film Weta Workshops did special effects for. And Kelsey, if you think Madagascar is magic then let me show you a trick where I take all the finest, most expensive cheeses in the world, feed them to a pig and then serve up its poop as cheese. That's what this movie does, with the cheese being celebrities and the pig being an actual giant pig.

I will, however, take you up on that Cinderella Man party.
