Fan Appreciation Might
ESPN recently made a couple of lists that rank each professional team in the grand scheme of happiness.
The first is a fan suffering index - a measure of misery and agony that comes from going at least 25 years without a championship, with plenty of math weighing playoff appearances, soul-sucking moments, etc. The Emerald City is featured prominantly in the list, which spans all sports and displays the 46 most most miserable (link)
INDEX OF FAN SUFFERING
1) Buffalo Bills (NFL)
2) Cleveland Browns (NFL)
3) Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)
4) Philadelphia Phillies (MLB)
5) Utah Jazz (NBA)
6) Portland Trail Blazers (NBA)
7) Houston Astros (MLB)
8) Boston Bruins (NHL)
9) Seattle Supersonics (NBA)
10) Vancouver Canucks (NHL)
. . .
14) Seattle Seahawks (NFL)
19) Seattle Mariners (MLB)
It's pretty heavy on the hockey, which the NHL won't even allow in Seattle. Otherwise, out of all the professional teams in the big four, Seattle's three have all caused enough suffering to put them in the top 20 most suffering franchises. They even rubbed each score (from the equation) in the faces of the fans, equating the score into "seven Bobby Ayalas," etc. Also notice the mean representin' by the Northwest - all five pro teams in the PAC N-Dub are in the top 20 most plagued franchises. Yeesh.
And if it looks like the Mariners got off easy, take a look at the much more legit list put out by ESPN ranking current fan satisfaction, with all pro teams 122. The other list isn't weighted so much by the current state of things, but there really is no time like the present. The Seahawks must be doing something right . . . and the rest is so, so wrong (link).
FAN SATISFACTION RANKING
1) Buffalo Sabres (NHL)
2) San Antonio Spurs (NBA)
3) Dallas Mavericks (NBA)
4) Indianapolis Colts (NFL)
5) Detroit Pistons (NBA)
6) Anaheim Ducks (NHL)
7) Los Angeles Angels (MLB)
8) Nashville Predators (NHL)
9) Pittsburgh Steelers ($@&!)
10) Carolina Hurricanes (NHL)
. . .
13) Seattle Seahawks (NFL)
. . .
90) Seattle Mariners (MLB)
111) Seattle Supersonics (NBA)
So Buffalo sits atop both lists. These rankings take into account the fan experience in person (price, stadium, etc.) The only reason the Mariners got any points was for Safeco Field which, really, could use some toughening up.
If you follow the link, you can check out the fan satisfaction rankings over the years, which is kinda fun. Here's where they ranked among all 122 professional teams from 2003-2007
2003 2004 2005 2006 2007
Mariners 36 67 61 72 90
Seahawks 78 54 59 24 13
Supersonics 55 60 33 57 111
What a difference a year makes. You can chart the Oklahoma City fiasco, the rise of the 12th Man, the steady slide of the M's . . . I can't even imagine what will happen if we lose Ichiro. I could go on for hours about the rankings, but I'll let you play around with it.
